The coal mine was the first exhibit to open at the museum in 1933, and features real mining equipment to demonstrate mining techniques, and how they have changed over time. The only way to visit the Coal Mine is through a tour ($12 for adults, $9 for kids); if you’re planning to take the tour I recommend buying a timed ticket in advance; you can typically get day-of tickets, but the available times may be limited.
It's an interesting tour especially for elementary-aged kids and older, but not a can’t-miss from my perspective. For younger children, be aware that frank discussions of mining dangers are included. And for young children or anyone with sensory processing disorders, there is loud equipment and short rides on a mining elevator and tram which are a little intense (and lights are turned off briefly for total darkness during the elevator ride).
